Technology is amazing. It is interesting how much it has become a daily part of people’s lives within the last decade. If you are like most people in West Virginia, you could not imagine leaving home without your cellphone or going all day without checking social media. Beyond that, people even use technology in areas that they may not think about all the time, such as in their vehicles.

In fact, the automotive industry is making great strides when it comes to building smarter cars, such as autonomous vehicles. However, there is a downside to this increase in technology. People expect that it will rapidly change things, such as reducing accident numbers, but that is not the reality.

The truth

According to Forbes, one of the downsides of autonomous vehicles is that this technology is just rolling out, so very few people have them. It will take years, possibly decades, for everyone to have this technology in their vehicle. Until then, there are regular automobiles on the road with drivers in control.

The claim

The idea is that autonomous cars will reduce the rate of drunk driving to zero because there will no longer be human drivers. While this may well happen eventually, it will not happen for a long time because not everyone will have the technology.

Even when these vehicles are available to the masses, there will always be those who do not trust the technology or who want to stay in control when on the road. They will not likely make the switch. Unless they become the standard, it is hard to believe that anytime soon we will see drunk driving wiped away due to driverless cars.

It is a nice thought that one day people will not have to worry about drunk drivers, especially since they kill thousands of people every year. However, you should not expect it to happen anytime soon.
