Some people in West Virginia may be aware that Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been going through a divorce from his wife, MacKenzie Bezos. The two were married for 25 years and have four children. The divorce was finalized in Washington on July 5.

MacKenzie Bezos, a novelist, will receive a stake of 4% in Amazon. This is about 25% of the shares owned by the two, a total of 19.7 million. She will become one of the richest women in the world upon receiving $38 billion worth of stock. Jeff Bezos will keep a 12% stake worth nearly $115 billion.

The couple have remained publicly amicable throughout the divorce, and Jeff Bezos praised his wife’s decision to donate half of her fortune to charity. This was in response to a campaign called The Giving Pledge that was created by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates that encourages wealthy people to donate half of their fortune to charity.

If couples are able to divorce amicably, it can make the process of property division and reaching an agreement about child custody less stressful. However, even if there is conflict in the divorce, couples may be able to negotiate an agreement. This may be less expensive than going to family law court, and it can allow the couple to have more control over the final outcome. A judge may make a decision about property division or child custody that one or both people are unhappy with, and the couple might not have recourse. However, there may be situations in which one person is uncooperative and litigation is necessary. One person might try to hide assets or might insist on sole child custody when the other parent wants joint custody. An attorney may be able to assist a person in negotiations or help a person prepare for a court hearing.
